Eine Bande niederländischer Musikanten vertont eine auf deutsch geschriebene David Hasselhoff-Biographie natürlich auf deutsch und ebenso natürlich mit der gegebenen Ernsthaftigkeit. Die Texte machen dementsprechend Spaß. Musikalisch sind die „Stromblocque Phantasien“ eine großartige Mischung aus experimentierfreudiger Elektronik, analogen Oldschool-Sounds, grandiosen Chören und einer klassisch ausgebildeten Frauenstimme, die Hasselhoffs Weisheiten den letzten Schliff geben.

Leuk dat een band zelf in de war raakt van de bewust moeilijke spelling die ze gebruiken… Zo is op de voorkant een c vergeten in de niet kinderachtige letterbrij van de cd-titel – als je moeilijk wilt doen, moet je het wel goed doen natuurlijk. Maar goed, het is ook niet niks waar de band, bestaande uit Peter Fengler, Hajo Doorn en Lukas Simonis, zich aan vergrepen heeft. Een heuse space-krautopera, waarbij complexe muziek en de dwaze belevenissen van David Hasselhoff elkaar afwisselen. David Hasselhoff, de tigderangs acteur die in commercials ‘de derde pratende banaan links’ mocht spelen… Absurde humor is de rode draad, met maffe teksten die zowel door Nina Hagen als het kozakkenkoor vertolkt lijken te worden. De muziek is een mengeling van toegankelijke experimentele elektronica, Rudi Carrell-hiphop, treurige worstwalsen, in lsd gedrenkte nachtclubjazz en complexe progrock. Een bijzonder luisteravontuur!

Ronald on Schlagermusik and David Hasselhoff. Schlagermusik is not camp, it’s a way of living. Ronald recently discovered the qualities of Roland Kaiser and now tries to help the Studiolab-people to overcome their hesitations and admit they were born to like Roland Kaiser too. Ronald has not been highly successful, though.
When not listening to schlagermusik, Ronald listens to David Hasselhoff’s new album: David Hasselhoff sings America (the sales supposedly went off the charts in some European countries). There is no one on this world who can cover classics as ‘La Ilsa Bonita’, ‘Raindrops keep falling on my head’ and ‘New York, New York’ as well as he can. Although he never saw it, Ronald is convinced that Coolhaven’s Strømblocque Phantasieën is the best opera ever.

COOLHAVEN -STROMBLOQUE – (CD by Taple Biz)
(…)Coolhaven is a different piece a cake. This trio of Peter Fengler, Hajo Doorn and Lukas Simonis, operates since 1999. On Brombron they recently released a cd with Felix Kubin (Vital Weekly 535). For their newest one “Strombloque Phantasiën” they sought the company of Mariska Simon who sings on several tracks. Coolhaven remains within wellknown borders of the songformat, how bizarre their songs may be. Their songs are prepared by a strange cocktail of laptops, guitar and voices. Techno-like use of computer laptop. The vocals sing along melodic lines. Other parts are spoken, or something in between (sprechgesang). The use of guitar (and ukekelele) and other noises are sparse but complete their soundconcept. They don,t fear cliches, or bombastic effects like in the final track. That’s what they want to play with. As a result their songs are far more accessible then the ones on Simonis’ solo-album. The whole sounds like a fake opera, and breathes undeniably a Neue Deutsche Welle atmosphere. Also the opera ‘Einfach’ of the belgian Simpletones is an inevitable association. Nina Hagen (track 9), Falco, a.o. came also to my mind. As is the case with their collaboration with Felix Kubin, for appreciating this release, it is essential that you can share their sense of humor. They are very conscious of what they are doing, and are probably well aware of the risks . That’s is part of their undertaking, and do it with verve.

Humor in zwei Varianten, die seltene und die unfreiwillige. Hier haben wir es
zu tun mit holländischem Humor, der sich über die unfreiwillige Variante
lustig macht. Das Trio, das zuletzt Suppe für die Nacht mit Felix Kubin gelöf-
felt hat, gröhlt zum Auftakt das weißwurstige ‚Drei Käse Hoch‘. Aber wer da
meint, dass hier wieder mal die ‚andern‘ Deutschen ihr Fett weg kriegen, der
darf gleich als Nächstes an der Dagmar Krause-Parodie ‚Stolz‘ kauen. An-
geregt wurden Peter Fengler, Hajo Doorn & Lukas Simonis angeblich durch
die David Hasselhoff-Biographie von Jörg Fischer (die gibt es wirklich, sogar
ins Englische übersetzt). Als Night Rider- & Baywatch-Mime und Platinkehl-
chen ein Popstar, ts ts. Auch wenn das Germans love David Hasselhoff-Kli-
schee Deutsche mit Österreichern verwechselt, die Schmerzfreiheit hierzu-
lande, was Kultur & Entertainment angeht, ich sage nur Grönemeyer, Ham-
burger Schule etc., musste natürlich Holländer auf den Plan rufen, um Salz
in die Wunden zu streuen. Scherze, gesungen ‚in der Sprache von Michael
Schumacher‘, harhar. Allerdings kann ich nicht ganz verleugnen, dass Cool-
havens Rock-Musical über ‚die dritte Banane von links in einem Werbespot‘
vor Hits nur so strotzt – ‚Geburtstagdrink am Sunset‘ (mit zickigem Dreigro-
schenoper-Flair), ‚Nase voll‘, ‚Kind von Traurigkeit‘ (erneut mit Mariska Si-
mon, diesmal als Operettensopran) oder ‚Ich bin ein Entertainer‘ verbinden
zwingende Texte über Popstarhybris mit abwechslungsreichen, locker flo-
ckig flotten Arrangements und klauen dem Schmerz das m. Dennoch,
‚Dandies in der Hölle‘, das überreizt die Zappa-Karte, und meint dabei wohl
auch noch, dass die Anspielung auf die Offenbach‘sche Unterwelt an Kraut-
fresser eh nur verschwendet ist? Kannibalenhäuptling zum Sohn: “Was ist
ein Holländer mit einem Pfeil im Rücken?” “Ein Käsehäppchen!” Harharhar

At the end of each year, we ask some of our favorite artists to list their favorite songs and albums of the past 12 months. This time, we’ve taken on a somewhat more audacious task: a survey of the entire decade in music. As with our year-end Guest List, the format remains rather open-ended– there are some top-10 lists, some long-form reflections on the past 10 years, and some completely random collections of memories, musings, and miscellany. As usual, the lists are presented in no particular order.

09. Coolhaven: Strømblocque Phantasiën
This feast of an album is a showcase of scary genre-free musical ideas. An “electro-technoïc-pop-opera, based on a book about the life of David Hasselhoff” was never going to trouble the charts, and this one’s sung in German. However there’s a peerless universe of instrumentation, melodies, and character on this disc and, song for song, there’s nothing else like it in your local record store. The weird thing is, it’s a right old hands-in-the-air floor-filler at points, though probably only my hands and my floor.
